Main Deity : Arulmigu Vellai Vinayagar.
Prominence of the Shrine : Ganapathy is the ruler of “moments” (which is called as Ganam in Tamil) and he is also called as Yanaimuhan(in Tamil Yanai means elephant and Mugan means face). Ganapathy is the main God and he is worshipped first. Every year in the Chathurthi Thithi which comes after new moon in Tamil month “Avani”(Aug-15 to sep-15) , Vinaka Chathurthi festival is celebrated grandly.
Temple History : In Kailas, when Goddess Parvati went to take bath, she created a boy using turmeric powder and gave him life. She ordered that boy to stay outside and guard her by not allowing anyone inside. He stood as barrier when Lord Shiva entered, so Shive got annoyed and cut off his head. After knowing that the boy was Parvati’s son, he called his cremators and ordered them to bring the head of the first creature they see. They saw only elephant first, so as per Shiva’s order they cut off elephant’s head and brought to Shiva. Lord Shiva grafted the boy’s body with the elephant’s head and gave him life. When Parvati came out and saw the boy, she asked “who he was?” in Tamil “Pillai Yaar” which turned as his name “Pillaiyar” in Tamil is the History of this temple.
