Prominence of the Shrine : It is believed that Samayapuram Mariamman appears here for 10 days from the Wednesday after the new moon in the Tamil month of Vaikasi. The other days Ambal here is worshipped as Jyothi (Form of light). In this temple there are no specific idols or statues of Goddess Amman.
Temple History : 600 years ago, lived a banglesseller who was a Amman devotee .He used to visit Samayapuram Mariamman temple every year ritually. On one of his visit, he was not able to reach the Samayapuram temple and he was worried that he might not be able to see the goddess. For him, the Goddess Mariamman flew over the sky (In Tamil Aagasam means sky) and appeared in front of him at this place. Hence this place is called Aagasa Mariamman. It is believed that, this incident happened on Friday after the new moon day of Tamil month Vaigasi. So every year during this time, 10 days of festival is conducted in this temple. During the festival a shape of Amman is created using ‘Darpai’ (a type of grass) and different decorations are made for the goddess every day. Holy water and the garland made up of lemon(offered to God) will be given as ‘Prasad ‘ to the devotees during the festival. Every year Amman starts with a small shape made up of grass and grows as “Raja Rajeswari” in 10 days. At the end of 10 days of festival, the goddess is moved to Samayapuram Temple and until next year Mariamman is only in the form of light here.
