Prominence of the Shrine : Kambattam is the place where the Cholas made coins. Hence the Deity here got the name Adhikambatta Viswanadhar. Here Saint Moorkanayanar engaged himself in gambling.
Temple History : Once upon a time this area was full of jungle. This place was called as ‘Malathivanam’.On that time there was a sage named “Dhoomakedhu” lived in near by village called udayagiri. One day Dhoomakedhu was checking which is the greatest shrine that will get him divine and understood he needs to go to Kumbakonam. When Dhoomakedhu reached this place (Malathivanam) , he saw a Shiva Linga in this temple. He also saw a temple tank to take bath. He stayed there itself for many days, and continuously worshipping Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva was happy to see Dhoomakedhu’s dedication and spirituality he offered a boon. Dhoomakedhu requested Lord Shiva to give a God name as Viswanathar, Goddess name as Ananda Valli. He also requested the temple tank to be called after his name. Lord shiva told Dhoomakedhu that he will give the names as requested by him.
