Prominence of the Shrine : Every new moon day, Yagna is conducted here to Prathyanga Devi from 10.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. Enmity is warded off for those who participate in this Yagna. Benefits would reach them. As Pancha Pandavas (the Five Pandava brothers) offered worship here, this place came to be known as ‘Ivar Padi’.
Temple history : In Mahabaratha(Indian Epic), Pandavas have lost their land, country to Gouravas and lived in the forest for many years. Pandavas where worried a lot about their future whether they will get back their country or not. Will they be surviving against all the evil forces etc..? They have been told to worship a Goddess in a place where it is surrounded by grave yard. If they worship the goddess, she will remove all the fears, increase their strength and help attaining the victory. When they were roaming in the jungle they reached the place which they were searching. The land was surrounded by grave yard in all 8 directions. There they saw Goddess Prithyangara Devi in a Suyambu form. They worshipped here and regained their lost glory. As this place was worshipped by pancha pandavas it was initially called as Ivar ( means five men in Tamil) Padi and later changed as Ayyavadi.
