Temple History : Parakira Pandian who ruled over Tenkasi wished to worship the lord at Kasi. The family deity of the king namely lord Muruga offered the king a rare medicinal tablet and made him worship Kasi Viswanathar by travelling through the sky. The king became worried as he could not go to Kasi every day to worship Viswanathar. The lord appeared in his dream and told him that he was there at a small distance. A colony of ants moving in procession would show him the way. The following day the king identified the ants moving in a procession, followed them and found Shiva Lingam and Nandi. He built a temple there and established the town Tenkasi. The holy construction work was started in 1445 by Parakkirama Pandian. After six years his brother Sadayavarman Kulasskara Pandian completed the construction of the Rajagopuram in 1505. These are mentioned in the stone inscriptions.
