The Lord here is believed to be the brother to Thiruppathi Venkatachalapathy. Hence any type of prayer or offering or vow to the Lord at Tiruppathi can be offered here. Devotees offer at this shrine celestial Marriage, Thirumanjanam, Garuda Sevai, taking around Golden Chariot etc. and fulfill their vows. While the Perumal is taken around the streets, he is taken along with His consort Thayar. There is no separate shrine for Thayar here. Every month on the day of ‘Sravanam’, as the ‘Sravana Deepam’ is taken along, the devotees are offered ‘holy presage’ (foretelling) called ‘Arulvakku’. Among the 108 Dhivya Desam, only in this shrine, Perumal worshipped with offering without salt. Marriages are conducted in large number here.
Temple History : The temple history is explained in ‘Brummanda Purana’. Once upon a type Markandeyan was worshipping lord Vishnu here and found a small girl (who was Goddess Sri maha Lakshmi) under a Tulsi plant. Goddess lived in Markandeyan’s home for many years. One day Lord Maha Vishnu arrived here and asked Markandeyan to give her daughter (Maha Lakshmi) to marry him. Markandeyan said that she is still a kid so she may not know proper cooking and if she forgets to add salt in the food then you will get angry. Lord Vishnu replied back saying that he will accept the food without salt also. From that day, the Prasad to the god is offered here without a salt.
