Main Deity : Arupathu Moovar (63 Nayanmars).
Prominence of the Shrine : Arupathu Moovar temple is constructed specifically for the 63 Nayanmars. 63 Nayanmars are the sages from Shivites who sang songs about Lord Shiva. Birth places of these 63 Nayanmars mostly in Tamil nadu today and some are outside of it. 58 were inside the Tamil nadu state, one is Andhra, One is Karaikkal, one in Karnataka and two are in Kerala. Out of the 58 Nayanmar birth places 29 of them have dedicated temples constructed by various kings. Most of them are not maintained well.
Temple History : Sixty three Nayanmars lived around 4th to 10th century primarily worshipped Lord Shiva and sang songs about Lord Shiva in Tamil. Sundara murthy Nayanmar mentioned about other 62 Nayanmars in his work “Thiruthonda Thogai”. Sekkizhar mentioned about 63 Nayanmars including Sundara Murthy in his work “Thiruthondar Puranam”. Usually in Shiva temples devotees can find these 63 Nayanmars as stone idols in one of the temple praharas. However this temple is dedicated only for 63 Nayanmars. Out of the 63 Nayanmars Appar, Sundarar, Thirugnana Sampanthar, Manikkavasagar are very important sages who visited all the Shiva temples in tamil land during their times. These four important Nayanmars are also called as “Shaiva Samaya Kuravar”. Nayanmar’s songs are called as twelve Thirumuraigal. First three Thirumuraigal was sang by Thirugnana Sampanthar, and 4,5,6 were sang by Thirunavukarasar. Seventh Thirumuraigal was sang by Sampanthar. Not all the sixty three Nayanmars were really poets and many of them were not gone through proper education but they were very dedicated to Lord Shiva.
